About the Course…
The Night Rating is an additional qualification added to your Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL), allowing you to fly during the UK defined hours of night.
It’s an essential step for pilots looking to broaden their flying horizons and enjoy the freedom of night operations.
To qualify for a UK CAA Night Rating, you must:
- Hold a Valid PPL: You must possess a valid UK CAA Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL)
- Complete Night Training: Undergo a minimum of 5 hours of flight training, including at least 3 hours of dual instruction and 1-hour solo flight time.
- Theory Knowledge: There is no theoretical knowledge exam required for the UK Night Rating. However, you will receive instruction on the theory and procedures relevant to night flying.

Practical Training
You will undergo at least 5 hours of flight time at night, including at least 3 hours of dual instruction, including at least 1 hour of cross-country navigation with at least one dual cross-country flight of at least 50 km (27 NM)
Ground Exams
There is no theoretical knowledge exam required for the Night Rating. However, you will receive instruction on the theory and procedures relevant to night flying.
Solo Flying
You will be required to perform at least 5 solo take-offs and 5 solo full-stop landings.
Skills Test
There is no skills test required for the Night Rating.

Common Course Queries
A few common questions regarding this course…
To receive a night rating, you will need a PPL licence.
However, you may complete your night rating training during the PPL course and apply for it when you apply for the PPL.
You can start at any age!
The minimum age to fly solo is 16 and you will need to be 17 to get the PPL.
However, you may begin training at any age.
(We require a parent/guardian to sit in the back if the student is under 18)
We operate a pay as you go system.
You will pay for each flight once it has been completed.
The only upfront fee is the annual membership (£180, subject to change)
